Valencia Bey
(They Long to Be) Close to You
Chicago-based musician Valencia Bey is no stranger to spreading joy and good vibes through music. She’s been perfecting her craft through singing, writing, recording, and performing for over 25 years.
Bey’s music has been described as “moving” and “positive”, Her debut project, Heart of a Brown Girl (2006), a mix of folk/rock, received favorable reviews. According to a review by WXRT-Chicago’s Richard Milne, it was “a little bit of Tracy Chapman with more of the big wailers like Odetta.” Most comfortable with her voice and her guitar, Bey’s acoustic performances are intimate and inspirational. She has performed on the folk music circuit, sharing her music with appreciative audiences gaining new fans whenever she performed. Mary Armstrong of the Philadelphia City Paper wrote, “You could sell me anything with that voice.”
Her sophomore project, Coffee and Conversation (2010), was a blend of rock, blues, soul, and jazz with themes of sunshine, love, loss, and pain. Now a fully seasoned musician, she asked her singing sisters to join her for her most recent project titled “Throwback”, inspired by music from the 70s, 80, and 90s through both covers and original tracks. The first release is a cover of The Carpenters’ 1970 hit “(They Long to Be) Close to You”, creatively reimagined with a soulful groove.
The song will be available on digital outlets on January 1, 2021.
