M-City J.r. IS DOMINATING THE SUMMER WITH VIRAL SMASH “ADDICTED TO MY EX”…
LISTEN TO HIS NEW SINGLE “BITCH BYE!”
Atlantic Records’ latest signing M-City J.r. has arrived today with another summer smash called “Bitch Bye!”
The “infectious” track premiered yesterday exclusively via Rap-Up.
Detroit rapper and entrepreneur M-City J.r. [pronunciation em sit-ee jay-are] confidently carries on that custom every time he picks up the mic. Growing up in a rough Detroit neighborhood, M-City J.r. was exposed to a great deal of violence and negativity. He felt the need to “brighten people’s lives” and subsequently turned to music as a way to provide a distraction from the hardships surrounding his community. “I’m a narrator,” he affirms. “I have no choice but to narrate what’s going on in my everyday life and experiences.” This sensibility drives his debut single “Addicted To My Ex,” and it’s big reason why both fans and tastemakers flipped over the song in 2016. The hilarious music video quickly racked up over a million YouTube views, while notching 12 million-plus Spotify streams and spawning countless fan-generated viral clips. Complex touted it in a feature entitled, “Bout to Blow: 10 Dope New Songs You Should Be Hearing Everywhere Soon,” and Billboard predicted it among “Tomorrow’s Hits.”
M-City J.r. has been diligently working towards this moment since grade school. He can vividly recall transforming Jay-Z’s “Can I Get A…” flow into a poem about pilgrims and Native Americans for a second grade assignment. It’s no surprise he got an A! Growing up, his mom encouraged school first and foremost, but he quietly honed his flow—listening to “HOV” and Eminem constantly for inspiration. As he released mixtapes online and performed countless shows, M-City J.r. simultaneously launched his multi-faceted business venture: Yacht Club Social Network. He would build and run recording studios throughout the city even becoming “the youngest venue owner in Michigan” with the launch of his club The Social Network in 2015. He’s also making his city proud, nodding to its influence with his moniker. “It stands for Motor City Junior,” he continues. “That means I am Detroit’s first-born. I’m a genuine product of my environment. We pronounce it ‘jay-are,’ because no grown ass man wants to be called ‘Junior,’” he laughs. Ultimately, M-City J.r. is now expanding the storied legacy of Detroit hip-hop, which of course boasts Eminem, D12, Big Sean, Royce da 5’9”, and more. “My music is the city,” he leaves off. “I was literally born and raised in the heart of this place. Everything I talk about comes from what’s going on. I want people to know I’m just like them. I come from similar struggles. I’ve been through similar heartache. I’m a regular guy from the inner city who worked his ass to live his dream. It’s hard, painful, and stressful, but it’s worth it. Don’t give up.”
“Bitch Bye!” is the follow-up to M-City J.r.’s global viral sensation, “Addicted To My Ex” which has amassed over 17 million combined views on YouTube plus an impressive 20 million worldwide streams on Spotify. The hilarious companion video has also proven to be a viral hit garnering over 4 million views in just 6 months after its debut. Watch here!
“Addicted To My Ex” has created a flurry of viral activity on social media, spawning thousands of videos of young fans across the globe participating in what is now known as the #FlexOnMyExChallenge, with many videos reaching over 100K views.
